When you’ve got some loose weight and you set out to lose it too fast, you don’t just lose fat. Depends on what sort of a diet plan you’re on of course, but you can lose quite a bit of water and muscle, both of which will do a lot to make your weight loss efforts much harder.

If you’re fairly overweight… like, you need to drop 50 pounds or more to reach your healthy weight, then you can lose about 3 or 4 pounds in a week. But as you start to get back to where your weight should be, the slower the weight will come off… and that’s okay, it’s nothing to worry about. It just means you need to be patient. chart your progress, and look for an average drop of 1 pound a week or so… that’s a healthy, reasonable goal. Not very exciting, but you’ll thank yourself for it 6 months from now when you’re 25 pounds lighter, or whatever you’re trying to get to.

Why can’t you go faster? Because the human body is built to survive! being thin isn’t important for survival. If there’s extra food around, we’re set up to store it in case there’s not as much to eat later on. So how do you go about dieting then?
Make real changes, forget the short term fad diets! They don’t work. Any permanent changes you can make for the better are way better. It’s very possible to eat healthy and enjoy it. Now you have built up some muscle mass from the beginner workouts and are ready to graduate to a split routine. Split routine means you work each body part once or twice a week; this allows you to concentrate on each muscle group and really build the muscle. Do your compound exercises first when the muscle has the highest amount of strength and energy. For example, if you are working legs, do squats and lunges first, then follow up with leg extensions and calf raises.

If you are training shoulders, do shoulder presses and upright rows first, then follow up with lateral raises, front and rear raises.

You want to switch up your split routine every 6-8 weeks so your body doesn’t adapt to it and stop growing. This is called periodization. With seemingly endless combinations of split routines, you should have no problem incorporating new workouts.

Take your grippers and hold the handles with your finger tips, now try to squeeze them; it’s a little harder this way.

Do not work your grip strength every day, 3 or 4 times a week will suffice. You need to give your forearm muscles time to recuperate just like the rest of the body. Each work out, try to push it a little more than the last time. You will find your forearm strength will develop fairly quickly and you will see a difference in the amount of weight you can hold onto during your regular workouts.

Bad Weight Lifting Techniques and Habits

 

A lot of people fall into bad habits when they are weight training.  There are a lot of issues that can arise, so my goal here is to only cover the major ones – that is, issues that will have a significant effect on your performance and muscle gain.

Incorrect exercise form is probably the most common problem there is.  The main issue that a lot of people have is cheating, but some just do exercises completely wrong and end up injuring themselves.  The best way to avoid this is to look over diagrams and videos or ask an experienced lifter for help with your technique.  Some of the most common exercises that people do flat out wrong are the squat, deadlift, and seated rows.  When doing squats, people will often incorrectly bend their backs, which’ll greatly increase the risk of injury – the same goes for deadlifts.  For rows, a lot of people seem to have an issue with leaning forward; your back is supposed to stay straight, as you should only be moving the cable with your arms.  You’ll be using the muscles in your back, but actually bending your back will cause injury and decrease the intensity.

Cheat reps are another thing I see people doing a lot in the gym.  These are okay every once in a while, but you have to realize that you’re not getting a full workout like that.  You may actually be causing some muscular imbalance.  The two most common exercises in which people cheat are standing curls (dumbbell or barbell) and the bench press.  When doing curls, people tend to lean backward, granting themselves additional leverage with which they can move the weight.  This is a good way to hurt your back or just not work your arms at all.  You should not be moving your back; in fact, only your forearms should be moving.  And with the bench press, I notice that a lot of people tend to only do half or quarter reps.  Again, this can be useful sometimes, but it’s generally a bad idea.  Many will also arch their back, lift their legs up off the floor, or bounce the weight off their chest.  All of these are bad, especially the middle one, as it can cause injury in the shoulder or back.  

Remember that having proper exercise form is important, but there is a lot more that you need to learn if you want to successfully gain muscle.
